Microcrystalline jasper is sometimes seen as a variety of chalcedony. But its composition often consists of up to 20% of impurities, giving it a grainy structure. In such cases, it is considered to be a distinct variety of quartz. It comes in a practically infinite range of colors, shapes and structures. It’s many different forms are often referred to by made-up names such as riband jasper, leopard jasper, poppy jasper or picture jasper, etc. It is used primarily for items made by artisans, and for a vast range of chains and cabochons.
