MALAQUITE
Malaquite is semi-opaque to opaque. It occurs in fibrous radiating masses of needles, and crusts or masses. This gem has rich and deep green colours, swirling bands and bulls eye patterns. In virtually all cases comes with bands ranging from pale to dark. It always occurs close to copper deposits because copper is responsible for its attractive color. Its name derives originally from the Greek ‘malakh?’, meaning mallow, a flowering plant with dark green leaves. It is used mainly the ornamental sector. It has been used in jewellery since the ancient Egyptians due to its vibrant colour.
